Alcatraz Island, known for the notorious federal prison on center of the island, stands today as a symbol of the harsh realities of punitive justice in our society. Each year, the FPJ swim team swims from Alcatraz across the bay to the shores of San Francisco, connecting the remote island to our loved ones awaiting their return. The swim is an annual fundraiser and campaign to raise awareness of the harm of incarceration on our communities.
Programs include holiday gifts for children with incarcerated parents; targeted support with daily necessities like groceries, rent assistance, or school supplies; and capacity building for FPJ to organize for abolition. Our community initiatives also include film, painting, and storytelling, all aimed at facilitating safety, growth, and resilience. Our 2024 fundraising goal for the Alcatraz Swim is $50,000.
This year, we will have 2 swim dates: September 7, 2024 and October 23, 2024.
